Budapest - Memento Park
Images taken at Memento Park in Budapest, Hungary (also referred to as Memorial Park). After the fall of the Soviet regime in Hungary (1989), the statues and monuments were removed. Memento Park is an open-air museum that is dedicated to the monumental statues and sculpted plaques depicting Lenin, Marx, Engles, and Hungarian communist leaders. The architect who designed the park gave the following explanation: "This park is about dictatorship. And at the same time, because it can be talked about, described, built, this park is about democracy. After all, only democracy is able to give the opportunity to let us think freely about dictatorship." The section of the park represented by these photos is called Statue Park, but officially the name is "A Sentence About Tyranny" Park after a poem by Gyula Ilyés, (poem in English).
