I first started taking pictures when my father gave me an instamatic camera in 1974. My first real photograph, where I can still remember framing the photo and pushing the shutter, was a portrait of my red keds on the beach, with my family sort of in the distance. When the film came back, this was the first in a long line of conversations about wasting film. I started just looking through my instamatic and clicking the shutter without film inside. I think I honed my powers of observation with this and have memories of photos I did not take.
I miss film photography. I loved developing film and photographs in my makeshift dark room in the basement. I like to take pictures with a variety of cameras and have assembled some alternative lenses and old film cameras. However, I don't miss the problems of keeping the chemistry at a constant temperature or of not having blocks of time. In that regard, I have taken to digital photography because I can pursue it in shorter bursts of time. Admittedly, I can also take as many pictures as the memory card will hold, without having to worry about wasting film.
Photo Revel is a website to revel in photography. With the art of photography, we have some tangible proof of a moment that is, at the same time, subject to our vision.
