Budapest, an old and architecturally beautiful city, has long held my imagination. It is a combination of Buda and Pest, which were united in 1873. The first settlements were built by Celts before 1 AD, and then the Romans, and then the Magyar tribes. The Ottomans conquered Buda in the 1500s and left a Turkish imprint on the city, before the Habsburg Empire took it over. All of these different influences have left an enduring feel on the city - how it is structured around the Danube (which divides Buda and Pest) and also in the buildings and streets.
